New RHIT Transport Policies

• Not new, we’ve just been operating under an exception

• All travel past 40mi will need to use RHIT or rented vehicles.

  • RHIT is faculty only

    • BIC Bus is licensed faculty only

  • Rented can be driven by anyone 21+

• Pre-launch testing and prep early on

• Cancellation fees $50 more than 24hr before

L1 kit and epoxy ordering

• Beginning of year hobby cost: ~1k-$1.5k

• Kit amount and methodology determined, sticking with our own kits due to spare parts.

• No recovery hardware - 3 L1s taken home last year none had intention to fly at home.

L1 sign up process

• Preliminary interest form at callout meeting after hobby introduction - gives me opportunity to plan out how many build sessions needed.

• Build session form 9/8 at 4pm

• First build session tentatively 9/10 7pm

• First launch is 9/28 at CIA Dodds Park, same site as first launch last year, weather and travel permitting.

Certification program overhaul and expectations

• New guides for L1 and L2/Research will be ready by activities fair.

• L1 guide was rewritten from the ground up to have enough detail and CAD so that someone with no experience or instructor can build.

• L2 guide clarifies language and now requires the following to submit a proposal:

  • Contact info

  • Rocket specs and performance estimates

  • Borrowed items

  • For projects that use a motor that requires L2 cert: Completed L1 build or L1/L2 on the same rocket. Insurance policy against “express interest and don’t finish.”

• Expecting roughly:

  • 5-7 total L2 flights

  • 2 L2 flights funded in previous years (no funding impact) - Peter and Miguel

  • 1 L2 motor and recovery hardware only (Roughly $95 “spent” but motor bought in previous years)

  • 3-5 L2 proposals funded this year depending on remaining budget and how expensive proposals are.
