Spray Paint Inventory

Spray Paint Inventory

Painting is an important part of customizing your rocket and making it meaningful to you, while competition teams benefit from the uniqueness of spray paint for identifying their vehicle, promoting Rose, and thanking sponsors. This page is designed to keep track of spray paint and give rough estimates for remaining quantities.

Location:

Team spray paint is located in the two small fire cabinets under the rocket rack. The left fire cabinet does not have a spring-operated door, and is therefore used more often. If you have personal spray paint you plan to use to paint rockets, the team recommends you store this in the paint cabinets labeled with your name or initials.

Access:

Unlike the motor cabinet, the paint cabinets may be opened by anyone at anytime, provided they are wearing the appropriate PPE and have the appropriate BIC/KIC access.

Usage:

When not being actively used to access paint, the paint cabinets must remain closed, as these are flammable, high-pressure aerosols. All spray painting must occur in the paint booth, which is to the left of the sanding booth and directly in line with Human-Powered Vehicle’s bay. Be very careful when there are other projects in the booth, as spray paint can get everywhere. Once your painting is done, place the paints you used back in the fire cabinets. Then update this sheet with any new opening of paint and any run-outs of paint. Paint is not out until you can shake it and hold it upright while trying to spray for over 10 seconds.

If there is a color of paint you want but the team does not have, send a message in the #general channel in the rocketry discord.

Painting Tips:

  1. Make sure to prepare surfaces for paint using some sandpaper around 300 grit.

  2. For multi-coat paint jobs, wait a minimum of 15 minutes between coats.

  3. For complex paint jobs and/or jobs that involve templates, wait at least an hour before applying the next coat or template to ensure you don’t accidentally remove paint from your project.

  4. To cover up large areas, paper or shop towels work a lot better than blue tape, as long as you don’t stay in one spot for much time.

  5. To avoid paint dripping, do not stay in one place with a spray can. Apply multiple coats to get that area instead.
