Ground station concept of operation

• Functions:

  • Send signals to cubesat

  • Receive signals from cubesat

  • Store data

• Our implementation: (IPROP poster)

  • Software Defined Radio (SDR) for handling the send and receive

  • Power Amplifier (PA) for amplifying send signal

  • Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) for amplifying receive signal

  • Directional (point at cubesat) antenna for picking up and sending signals.

    • Is like 20 feet high (at least)

    • Requires rotation system and location tracking

  • Satnogs for handling location tracking and storing data

    • Raspberry pi to host satnogs

  • Yaesu rotator for rotating

    • Arduino as a motor driver

  • Transmit and receive switch

Steps forward

• An idea of what we need to do for the project:

  • Implement an LNA

  • Read a signal from a satellite similar to ours (Morrison is the guy for what transmission capabilities for our sat)

  • Implement transmission capability

  • Send a signal to a satellite and confirm it worked (Morrison is again the guy)

  • Power system design

  • Power system tests

  • Acquire the hulman barn (need to talk to Sam about that)

  • Set up all non-antenna facilities in the hulman barn

  • Antenna constructed

  • Full-system testing

Kickoff meeting

• Will take place with Yejia, Tim, Sam, Morrison

  • Each subteam will have these

  • There will be a meeting with all the leads to figure out the exact objectives

• Goal of kickoff (work in progress):

  • Generate a plan of development for the next year

• Up-front work for kickoff:

  • Become familiar with the concept of operations

  • Determine the goals for the end of the year
